A melodrama in 3 acts with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, Tosca debuted at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on 14 January 1900.The action is set in papal Rome at the time of the Battle of Marengo. Here Floria Tosca, a passionate and strong-willed singer, and her lover Mario Cavarossi, a painter with liberal sympathies and a convinced anticlerical, are hindered by Baron Scarpia, the head of the Bourbon police in the service of the papacy. Driven by murky passions and innate wickedness, Scarpia, like a sadistic puppeteer, will determine the course of events from the beginning to the end of the opera.
